It is in times of crisis when our ability to generate solutions is tested. This is what motivated Andrés Peña, Marymount class of 1999, to create "Escudos de Vida", 3D printed face masks for medical personnel. Andrés is the founder and CEO of Ideaware, a company that exports software but who has, during the coronavirus outbreak, dedicated his time to design and produce more than 600 face masks to protect people working at different hospitals in Barranquilla and nearby towns.
"I have had 3D printing as a hobby for several years. When I saw they were using this method in Europe to make these masks, I decided to put my hobby into good use. I contacted several other manufacturers in Barranquilla and that is how the idea materialized. We had support from different institutions and also individual donations. @escudosdevida is not for profit, all the masks are donated, and this is our contribution to people who are heroes during this difficult time", expresses Andrés. "It has also been an opportunity to generate employment by hiring people to make these masks".
Andrés is a Software Engineer, with a degree from Universidad del Norte, and has more than 10 years of experience in Product Management, UX/UI design and Software Engineering. Congratulations for this innovation and for making a difference!
